The United States Department of Homeland Security has raised the threat level to Orange, or High, for all domestic and international flights in the wake of a Dec. 25 terrorist incident on Northwest Airlines Flight 253.

According to federal Homeland officials, a passenger on board the flight “set off a device and was subdued by passengers and crew.”

As a result, additional security measures have been implemented in partnership with airline and law enforcement authorities.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said it has the capability to “surge resources” as part of a layered approach to the terrorist airline threat. Additional screening measures include explosive detection canine teams, law enforcement officers, gate screening, behavior detection, and other visible and invisible measures.

Travelers are advised to check the TSA’s updated list of restricted items when flying.

DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano urged the American people to “be observant and aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious behavior or activity to law enforcement officials.”
