BREAKING NEWS: Reports from Silver Springs, Maryland say that a gunman, James J. Lee, was in custody after a standoff on Wednesday at the Discovery Channel headquarters.

At an afternoon news conference, Montgomery County Police Chief J. Thomas Manger confirmed that after four hours, the gunman was shot, wounded and in custody. It was later reported the gunman is now dead.

Police say the gunman was holding three hostages, and all three hostages are safe and out of the building.

“He came in with explosive devices strapped to his person, we believe he also came in with two boxes and two backpacks that we suspect may have explosive devices in them,” Manger said at the news conference. “He pulled out a handgun, told everyone to stop moving. Several people ran out of the lobby area. In the end, he had three hostages, a security guard and two other individuals.”

Manger said all of the hostages were male, and over the course of the next several hours, trained negotiators spoke with the gunman.

“He had a number of issues with Discovery,” the Chief remarked. “He’s had a history of Discovery, of conflict with Discovery. One case resulted in his arrest a couple of years ago.”

Manger said tactical officers were able to get into position, within very close proximity, and were watching him via camera.

“At one point, the suspect, it is reported that he pulled out the hand gun that he came in with and pointed it at one of the hostages,” Manger stated. “It is unconfirmed whether he actually fired the weapon or not. At that point, our tactical units moved in, shot the suspect. The suspect is deceased.

Authorities are investigating the possibility of other explosive devices, including four devices — two boxes and two backpacks — that could pose a continued threat.

“The building is still a crime scene, and we still have work to do,” Manger said. “No one has been injured, other than the suspect.”

Police say Lee was displeased with the Discovery Channel’s broadcasting policies concerning the environment and animal issues.

According to a three-page “manifesto” circulating on the Internet today, Lee said the Discovery Channel must broadcast to the world their commitment to save the plant.

“Focus must be given on how people can live WITHOUT giving birth to more filthy human children since those new additions continue pollution and are pollution,” Lee stated in the document.

The gunman called on the media giant to broadcast programs that would encourage human sterilization and infertility.

Lee also advocated the abolition of programs which promote war and the technology behind it. He said Discovery should “talk about ways to disassemble civilization and concentrate the message in finding SOLUTIONS to solving global military mechanized conflict.”

The hate-filled manifesto also suggested Discovery develop programs that would bring solutions to the immigration, global warming , the “dangerous” US world economy, and population control.

“Saving the planet means saving what’s left of the non-human Wildlife by decreasing the Human population,” Lee wrote. “That means stopping the human race from breeding any more disgusting human babies!”

David Levy, Discovery Communications spokesman, complimented the Montgomery County law enforcement as an “incredibly professional operation. All of our employees are accounted for. The word of the day is professionalism. We executed our emergency evacuation plan flawlessly, everyone is safe and sound.”
