Remembering 9/11: Do we need ongoing threats to our nation to teach patriotism to future generations?

On September 11, 2001, the weather was as beautiful as it could be in most parts of our nation. The air was crisp and many people were enjoying their beautiful “autumnesque” morning. Can you remember the feeling of that moment before you found out about the tragic events that would eventually define that day?

Now, it is just another day, September 11, 2010. What is it that comes to mind on this day? Do you have a meeting? A doctor’s appointment? Will you find yourself sitting in class? For many, today’s date is just another day, and it will go on as planned; just as it should.

For many, the opposite of oppression is not acceptance, it is instead immigration.

Since the founding of the United States, its borders have provided security and home to many who would seek asylum from one form of oppression or another.

One glance across Times Square in New York City, and it is quite apparent that to be an American means that you might be from one of many races, religions, or cultures.

Prior to 1890, individual states regulated immigration into the United States. However, throughout the 1890’s European politics became unstable, restrictive laws…
