A bill introduced on Wednesday in the Ohio House of Representatives aims to reduce the number of abortions by making it illegal to perform one after a fetus’ heart beat is detected.

Called the “heart beat bill”, supporters say modern technology now makes it possible to detect signs of life at a much earlier state in the development process. Doctors are now able to detect heartbeats as early as 18 days after conception…

UPDATED: U.S. President Barack Obama spoke from the White House on Friday evening about the crisis in Egypt.

“As the situation continues to unfold, our first concern is preventing injury and loss of life,” Obama said. “I want be very clear to the Egyptian authorities to refrain from any violence on the protesters.”

“I also call upon the Egyptian government to reverse the action they’ve taken to interfere with internet access.”

Obama also spoke to the rioters and said violence and destruction will not lead to the reforms they seek.

The report, published by Freedom House, also warns that a five-year trend of freedom “backsliding” represents the most significant decline since data was first published in 1972.

FBI: Arizona Congresswoman was target in violent shooting, 2nd witness sought
