Depressed nation: One in five adult Americans suffer from mental illness

A new national survey released on Thursday says 45.1 million adults in America (19.9%) suffer from mental illness — and for 11 million adults (4.8%) it is serious.

The results, published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), underscore the fact that mental health issues impact the lives of Americans through family discord, lost productivity, substance abuse, disability and suicides.

“Too many Americans are not getting the help they need,” said SAMHSA Administrator Pamela S. Hyde. “Opportunities to prevent and intervene early are being missed. The consequences for individuals, families and communities can be devastating.”…

His darkest moments came when he was left for dead after being knocked over the head with a sledge hammer and locked in a barn with nothing to eat but his own waste.

Now, a New York family who rescued this twenty-four year old quarter horse named Jet over three years ago are desperately seeking a new home for him where he can retire with dignity and grace.

A federal district judge in California has ruled that Proposition 8 — the voter-approved initiative which sought to strictly define marriage as an act between one woman and one man — violates the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution.

The decision effectively overturns the voter initiative and allows same-sex marriages in the State of California.

Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker said Proposition 8 “unconstitutionally burdens the exercise of the fundamental right to marry…”

Chatroulette is an amazingly simplistic concept in today’s online world of flashy graphics and content-rich websites: connect two random strangers via their webcam. Oh, and throw in an over-sized chat room for giggles and grins.

Ironically, the appeal of the site is also it’s fatal flaw. With virtually no content control, filtering capability or user account information, the potential for inappropriate use is high.
