In what they call resistance to an “all-out assault” on the Second Amendment, California Tea Party groups are urging gun rights supporters to get involved in a civil rights march on Sat., Feb. 23 on the steps of Ventura’s City Hall.
“Come to this peaceful, lawful event to help galvanize resistance to further gun bans, motivate legislators to stop it, and officials to enforce existing laws,” said George Miller, a member of the Ventura County Tea Party, on the group’s website. “If we don’t stop ‘em now, we may have to fight ‘em in the courts or the streets.”
The public display of support for the Second Amendment is just one of many such events taking place across the United States as a result of proposed tougher laws by politicians to reduce gun violence in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting in Connecticut last December.
In addition to rallying supporters this Saturday, the Ventura County Tea Party is also asking Second Amendment supporters to:
- Contact their legislators to express opposition to further gun restrictions
- Support and join groups like the National Rifle Association
- Talk to family, friends, associates and church members
- Ensure they have adequate home defenses
- Consider joining militia units to assert and protect their rights
“If legislators enact unconstitutional bans even worse than the current ones, we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it,” Miller said in a separate blog post. “But, we WILL cross it, not wait on the shore.”
Another California group, the Simi Valley Moorpark Tea Party, held a program called “Protecting Our Second Amendment Rights” at their regular Feb. 20 meeting.
The event featured remarks by Simi Valley Councilman Mike Judge, who is also a senior officer with the Los Angeles Police Department.
Judge said the current gun control bills ““that are floating in the state are pretty bad. They’re all in violation of the Second Amendment in my opinion,” according to a news report by the Ventura County Star.
The program also featured excerpts from the documentary, “In Search of the Second Amendment,” which is a collection of Second Amendment experts who trace what is described as the true story of the American right to arms.
